What is math anxiety, and is it real?

As a tutor, I’ve worked with numerous students who have performed well during tutoring sessions, and then gone on to fail the upcoming math test.  These students claim that the anxiety felt when sitting down to take a test causes them to forget all they’ve learned.  I’ve often wondered whether this debilitating math related anxiety is common, and whether there’s anything that can be done to help these students.  According to a recent article on the website Red Orbit, math anxiety is extremely commonly and, ironically, is related to higher cognitive ability and a better working memory.  This comes as a surprise to me.  Read on for the full article.

    Some students need to approach math in a different way to understand it. Many students tend to give up and say “It’s too hard” or “When will I ever use this?” If a student is approaching math with this attitude, after school help or a private tutor may be needed to help them learn the concepts in a way that is easier for them.
