Using Spring Break Wisely – SAT prep

The end of the third nine weeks is nearing. As the year comes to a close and we enter the fourth nine weeks, most students are breathing a sigh of relief that they’ve survived another year of harsh academics and demanding extracurriculars.

What can your student do to ensure that he or she is well prepared for the demands of the final grading period and beyond? I advise my students that in addition to taking it easy and catching up on much needed sleep, they use the break to start studying for the SAT and ACT.

Using the best prep materials is essential in getting the most from your prep time. The College Board’s Official SAT Study Guide, Up Your Score, and Acing the SAT I Math are among my favorite prep books for the SAT; The Real ACT Study Guide is the best of the ACT prep books.

2. Schedule daily study sessions with concrete manageable goals for each.

For example, decide to study from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Monday, and to finish Test 1 Section 3 during that time. The more detailed your plans, the more likely you are to stick to them!
